Seeing Emmett some twenty feet from me, I freeze. His eyes are fixed in my direction. âAnne, I know it is you.â
Heart thumping in my chest, I lower myself from the branch and pad to him. âItâs hours before dawn, what are you doing on our property?â
âI could ask you the same.â His mouth forms a smile.
âI couldnât sleep.â
âHow many nights a week would you say you canât sleep?â
âSeveral. Why?â I ask, wishing I had the gift of a psychic or a witchâs mind control.
He broadens his shoulders and straightens his back. His eyes hold my gaze. âIâve seen you in the forest. The others too.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI know youâre not like us.â
âWhat exactly have you seen?â
âYou nearly fly through the air, jumping from tree to tree. You race through the forest at amazing speeds. You take down a buck like heâs a fawn.â
âYou must be dreaming, perhaps sleepwalking.â
âHow do you become the beings you are?â
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âDonât lie to me. Iâve been watching you for months. Iâve seen you sink fangs into a rabbit. Are you demons?â
âYouâre not thinking clearly. Let me walk you home.â I motion west to his property.
âIs this why I canât call on you because youâre not human? I sense that you like me.â
âYou are a niceââI almost say boy but think better of itâ âman.â Fitting my hair behind my ears, I listen for others. Iâm not sure how my comrades would react if they thought Emmett knew our secret. âPlease, let me walk you to your property.â
He wraps his fingers around mine. âYour body temperature is higher than ours. Is that part of being what you are? You canât eat sugar and like to eat animals raw. You have fangs like a snake, are fast as a deer.â
I yank my hand from his grip. âYouâre not safe here,â I hiss. âI will escort you home. Please, I beg you. Iâm not sure what delusions youâve conjured up, but please right your mind before you speak of this to anyone.â
âFine, Iâll let you walk me to our property. But know this, I have seen things, and I know Iâm not crazy. Iâm not going to tell anyone. I will keep your secret as long as you donât hurt any of us.â
âYou know we mean no one harm, right?â I peer into his eyes.
âIt seemed like you were threatening me just now.â
âNo.â I motion for him to follow. âJust warning you.â
âWill the others not like that I know?â
âNo, they would not.â
âThen, itâs our secret.â He grabs my shoulders and presses his lips to mine. Backing away, he takes hold of my hands. âWhat you are doesnât matter to me. Iâll be everything you need me to be. Just tell me you care for me, and Iâll do anything you say. We will be wed and have a beautiful family. I can make you happy.â
His grip on my hands feels uncomfortable, and I fight the urge to rip my fingers away. Heâs such a dear soul.
